Banks stick by Qatar on QNB funding despite Gulf spat

Qatar National Bank (QNB) has signed a $3.5bn loan with 21 international banks, with one of those also selling over $2.3bn of MTNs for the issuer, showing that banks’ jitters about supporting Qatari entities in the wake of the dispute between the sultanate and six other Arab states have partly been assuaged. The loan has tested the loyalties of banks active in the Middle East, since six Arab countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt severed diplomatic ties with Qatar in June 2017, alleging it had supported terrorism.
