Spectre of trade war re-emerges to haunt markets

Global equity markets suffered their worst days of the year this week after an apparent breakdown in trade talks between the US and China, causing investors to sell and volatility to spike and possibly wrecking equity issuance plans, write Sam Kerr and Ross Lancaster.

US president Donald Trump ramped up hostility against China on Twitter last weekend to the surprise of many, accusing it of attempting to renege on previously agreed commitments.

US media reported that China had sent back the draft trade agreement between the two countries full of revisions.
