Ecuador’s market-friendly debt restructuring hit a bump in the road this week as bondholders put forward proposals that would include conditions around environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors.

Ecuador has won plaudits for its approach to debt restructuring by engaging with its bondholders before beginning a formal consent solicitation process for its notes. That has contrasted with Argentina’s more tense debt negotiations with its creditors.
