Ireland is open to the possibility of adding green bonds to its funding mix as it looks to diversify its portfolio of debt instruments, according to the country’s head of funding.

Several other countries are also exploring the possibility of issuing sovereign green bonds, following in the footsteps of Poland at the end of last year and France in January.

“We continuously review developments in the market to ensure that the range of instruments optimises Ireland’s position as a sovereign issuer,” said Frank O’Connor, director, funding and debt management at Ireland’s National Treasury Management Agency.

“We have previously stated our intention to diversify our issuance over the long term. During 2017 we raised €609.5m by issuing Ireland’s first-ever inflation-linked bonds and future diversification may include other debt instruments such as green bonds.”

Ireland last week said it would issue €14bn-€18bn of bonds in 2018. The sovereign has issued €15.75bn of bonds in 2017.
