  • Peru could receive a payout from its World Bank-issued catastrophe bond after an earthquake hit the country’s Amazon region on Sunday morning. Investors are expecting a 30% loss to principal, but this will not be confirmed for several weeks.
  • Portugal attracted strong domestic interest on Thursday when it became the first issuer from the eurozone to enter the Panda bond market. Other borrowers from the eurozone are set to follow in its path, including Austria, as issuers look to broaden their investor base and develop the Panda market.
  • Bayport, the Mauritius-based microfinance company, issued the first African ESG bond outside the supranational sector, printing a $260m three year at 11.5% on Wednesday, and obtaining a social bond second opinion from Sustainalytics, at the suggestion of arranger DNB Markets.
  • Ecobank Transnational Inc, the pan-African bank based in Togo, tapped a $500m 9.5% 2024 bond it issued in April for a further $50m on Tuesday. But despite the note being printed flat to the outstanding, according to leads, and the original bond having rallied over 150bp in yield since pricing a month ago, the tap brought the deal in by another 25bp in secondary trading.
