Responses to the Republic of South Africa's request for proposal on issuing sukuk in 2012 were due by the close of business on Wednesday. Earlier this month the country's national treasury asked banks to submit advisory proposals for a benchmark government sukuk in the local and international markets. If the deal goes ahead, it would be the first sukuk by a country with a minority Muslim population.
