Fed takes centre stage as investors hope for cuts

The US Federal Reserve is expected to cut its interest rates by 25bp on Wednesday, but investors are keeping a close watch on what the central bank says when it makes its policy announcement. Many are likely to be disappointed unless it hints at bigger cuts in the coming year.

The Federal Open Market Committee concludes its two day meeting on Wednesday, having already sent some parts of the market reeling when it announced on Tuesday via the New York Fed an up to $75bn injection into repo markets to contain borrowing costs there.
