Who has the stamina for golf these days?

The life of a syndicate banker is fraught with early mornings and sleep deprivation, meaning weekends and holidays are a crucial time for recharging your batteries and hiding the bags under your eyes. Unless, of course, you’re blessed with the boundless energy of National Australia Bank’s Nigel Owen.

Owen is well known at GlobalCapital for his busy weekends — which often includes amateur refereeing in in the Combined Counties League — that leave reporters feeling (even more) like feckless layabouts.

The golf enthusiast spent last week in Scotland for the Ryder Cup, but even his stamina was tested by the 7am tee-offs. Exacerbated by a questionable decision to set up basecamp in Glasgow — 50 miles away from the Gleneagles resort.

Unfortunately, lads’ holidays at the golf may be off the menu for the NAB syndicator in future. The excitement (?) and glamour of the Rider Cup have persuaded his fiancée of the virtues of the sport of golf and she’s already looking into another golfing trip.

Rumours that Nigel tried to embed himselfin both the American and European camps cannot be confirmed at this stage.
