This year structured equity derivatives were the hottest product and banks are positioning themselves for another big year. European based bankers were trying to penetrate the U.S. market, where they think institutional investors have been burned too many times to turn down capital-protected notes. In Europe, equity pros were working out how to use new legislation, such as UCITS III, to offer derivatives to a wider range of investors.
Asia was once again focused on China, but this time with results. Derivatives licenses were introduced and market access industry developed and bankers are getting ready for more next year.
