A cadre of officials--includingMark Arimura, ex co-head of Japanese equity derivatives at Nikko Salomon Smith Barney--have formed Abbot Kinney Advisors and are preparing a long/short equity fund focused on the real estate sector. The firm, which is based in Tokyo and Santa Monica, Calif., is now seeding the fund with internal money. It is slated to be launched to outside investors in February, said Hans Tiedemann, managing member.
The fund will be managed by Miyako Shibamoto who ran a real estate equity portfolio for Goldman Sachs Asset Management. The Abbot Kinney Japan Real Estate Fund will invest in Japanese stocks connected to the real estate sector. This includes real estate investment trusts and real estate-related stocks such as real estate companies, construction concerns and even retail outfits with substantial real estate portfolios, said Tiedemann.
