Mariana Capital Markets, the London-based boutique brokerage firm, has hired Manvir Nijhar, the former co-head of equity derivative flow sales for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Citigroup in London, as a partner, also in London. Nijhar is regarded by market officials as one of the most profitable equity derivative salesman in the City. In 2010, he was named in the Forbes Top 30 under 30 in Finance ranking and was involved in expanding the sales volumes and vanilla and exotic products in Citi’s equity derivatives business.

He reports to Elton James, managing partner in London. At Mariana, he will bring his investment banking sales experience to boost the sales efforts of the firm across all asset classes and the newly launched investment management business.

“The entrepreneurial approach at Mariana and the ability to help continue to build this franchise makes this an exciting opportunity for me,” said Nijhar. “We hired Manvir as he is a highly respected professional in the market and a very valuable resource to our growing presence in the equity derivatives space,” added Daniel Hawkins, partner in London.

Nijhar left Citi in February and has been on gardening leave prior to joining Mariana. Before joining Citi, he worked at BNP Paribas and Barclays Capital.

Nijhar’s appointment comes two and a half years after Mariana was founded. Since then, the firm has expanded its team, including the appointments of Rajvinder Singh Minhas from Nomura (DI, 5/11/11), Ian Hunter from Bank of America Merrill Lynch (DI, 10/20), and Gary Powell from Vantage Capital Markets.
