BanColombia and Brazil’s Banco Votorantim attracted over $5bn of demand for their subordinated tier two bank debt early this week. This underscored strong investor demand for Latin American financial paper, even in a subdued trading week dominated by fears over European banks’ stress tests results, bankers said.

Nationwide Building Society made a successful comeback to the European lower tier two market this week when it priced a well oversubscribed Eu750m 10 year bullet issue. The deal, which was led by Barclays Capital, Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan, attracted an order book of Eu1.3bn and 130 investors.

Bank of East Asia became the latest Asian financial institution to sell 10 year bullet lower tier two bonds last week, raising $450m from an issue that rival bankers said suffered from poor — or unlucky — timing.
