Brazil moves closer to covered bond issuance

The Brazilian Monetary Authority (CMN) has published a covered bond regulatory framework which paves the way for the country’s five largest lenders to press ahead with deals. Though the move is credit positive for banks, they are unlikely to issue in euros in the near term.

Following the publication of primary covered bond legislation two years ago, Brazil’s central bank launched a public consultation on draft secondary covered bond legislation in February.  

The approved framework, which was enacted on August 28, had no major change from the draft.
