Barclays Capital will hire several analysts to cover equity derivatives in the coming year on the heels of appointing Larry Kantor and Mark Howard as co-heads of global research last week. The hires will be in the U.S. and Japan. Currently, three equity derivative analysts cover primarily Europe. "The derivatives business is growing, and we are expanding research to support it," Kantor said. Barclays' 192-person global research department focuses on fixed income, foreign exchange, commodities, emerging markets and economics.
Barclays last week shook up its division after appointing Tom Kalaris, former head of sales and research and ceo for the Americas, to run the bank's wealth management division. Kantor and Howard, the former heads of rates and credit research, respectively, replaced him at the helm of the research department, and Guglielmo Sartori di Borgoricco, formerly the head of distribution in the U.K. and Europe, took over the global sales department. The changes and expansion are part of Barclays' plan to break into the top five global investment banks league, Kantor said. Kalaris, di Borgoricco and Howard, all based in London, could not be reached for comment by press time.
