Credit Suisse’s head of Asia FX sales leaves
Ivan Chan, the head of emerging markets FX sales for Asia at Credit Suisse left the bank on September 28. Chan, who had been based in Singapore, told Asiamoney PLUS that he is taking some time out to travel to Europe.
He resigned from the role earlier this year, but remained at the bank to oversee the handover. He had worked for Credit Suisse since 2001, and was part of the bank’s hedge fund sales team before being appointed head of global FX sales for Asia in 2008. Before joining Credit Suisse, he worked for AIG from 1993 to 2001.
Eng Chien Chan (who is no relation) has been appointed to be Credit Suisse’s new regional head of FX Asia. In addition he will continue in his current role at the bank of head of Southeast Asia and India corporate and financial institutional sales.
Page to head new JPM SE Asia DCM team
Simon Page, current co-head of Asia ex-Japan high yield and sovereign at J.P. Morgan, will relocate to Singapore from Hong Kong to take on the role as head of the newly created Southeast Asia debt capital markets (DCM) team.
He will retain his current position, alongside Luke Garner, who will continue to be based in Hong Kong, according to an internal memo written by Murli Maiya, head of DCM for Asia ex Japan.
He will continue to report to Maiya, but will also now report to Mark Follett, head of high grade debt capital markets for Asia ex Japan. Over the next few months, the bank plans to make additional hires to the new team.
In other news, J.P. Morgan Australia has hired Graham Lees as head of syndicated and leveraged finance sponsors in Australia.
BoA-Merrill in ISB reshuffle
Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BoA-Merrill) has made some internal changes to its international subsidiary banking (ISB) team according to a memo seen by Asiamoney PLUS.
Steven Victorin, head of Asia Pacific corporate banking and global head of ISB announced on September 28 that Sunder Iyer will take on the role of head of Asia Pacific ISB and Janet Young will fill a new role managing the commercial banking side of ISB. Both will be based in Singapore and will report to Victorin.
Iyer has recently returned to Asia, and has been working as a regional client manager within ISB Asia at BoA-Merrill. Before this he worked in a number of corporate banking and ISB roles for the bank, based in London, New York and Singapore. He has worked at BoA-Merrill since 1982.
Head of Macquarie Capital Asia to leave
Kalpana Desai, head of Macquarie Capital Asia will leave the bank in April. She has no plans to take up a role with a competitor. She joined the Australian bank’s Hong Kong office in 2009 as deputy head.
Desai will be replaced by Alex Harvey, who will take on the role in addition to his current position as regional CEO for Macquarie Group. He moved to Hong Kong in February from Sydney were he was global head of the TMT group.
Before joining Macquarie, Desai was head of Asia Pacific M&A for Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
UBS’ Tan promoted to global head of macro strategy research
Tan Min-Lan, former head of Singapore equities and research at UBS has been appointed global head of macro strategy research. The role is effective immediately. Tan will continue to be based in Singapore.
Before joining the Swiss bank in 2002, Tan worked for Merrill Lynch as a Southeast Asian economist and strategist, as well as a senior economist at the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).
BNPP IP hires fixed income team from Rexiter Capital Management
BNP Paribas Investment Partners (BNPP IP) has hired four emerging markets (EM) fixed income professionals from the subsidiary of State Street Global Advisors, Rexiter Capital Management. The new roles are effective from October 1.
The hires bring the firm’s Asian fixed income team to a total of ten portfolio managers. They will be based in London, led by one of the new hires, John Morton. The team is part of BNPP IP’s global fixed income partner, Fischer Francis Trees & Watts (FFTW), which has based in Boston, London and Singapore and reports to Guy Williams, chief investment officer of FFTW.
In addition to Morton, the new hires are Mark Capstick, Lewis Jones and Daniel Wood, who will all take on positions as portfolio managers for the emerging markets fixed income team at FFTW. They have all worked for Rexiter Capital Management since November 2007, managing EM fixed income funds.
Morton is now head of emerging markets fixed income at FFTW. At Rexiter he was chief investment officer for fixed income. Before this, he was director of global credit strategy at State Street Global Advisors.
BNY Mellon creates role for ING’s Suri
Navin Suri has joined BNY Mellon as Asia-Pacific head of intermediary distribution, a newly created role.
He will be based in Hong Kong and will report to Alan Harden, CEO for BNY Mellon’s Asia Pacific investment management business and to PeterPaul Pardi, head of global distribution at the bank, who is based in London.
Suri joins the bank from ING Investment Mangement where he was managing director and CEO for the company’s India business.
Before joining ING IM in 2008, he worked for Citibank in Singapore, New Delhi and Bangalore in a variety of roles including Apac head of sales for Citibank’s retail banking arm, as well as Apac sales and distribution head for the bank’s investment business.
Tripathi to lead bonds at Reliance Cap AM India
Amit Tripathi has been appointed to the position of head of fixed income for India’s Reliance Capital Asset Management. The role is effective from November 1 and he will be based in Mumbai.
He will take over from Amitabh Mohanty who has been promoted to the position of head of debt strategies at the asset manager’s parent company Reliance Capital.
Pictet Asset Management names head of EM credit
Alain Nsiona Defise has been appointed head of emerging credit within the fixed income team at Pictet Asset management. He will be based in London.
He joins from J.P. Morgan where he headed up the emerging corporate team. Before this he worked for nine years at Fortis Investments where he was a senior portfolio manager, initially in charge of high yield investments, and later he worked on the emerging corporate business.
He will report to Sebastien Eisinger, head of fixed income at Pictet Asset Management. Defise will head a team of three, comprising Vincent Ferraton, Rosemary Fu and Teck Hoon Low.
Hellewell appointed COO at Segantii Capital
Nigel Hellewell has joined Segantii Capital in Hong Kong as chief operating officer. He joins from UK hedge fund BlueCrest Capital Management, where he was a partner.
He takes over from Chuak Chan, who left the role last year to head up the Hong Kong operations of Australian company Ascalon Capital.
Before BlueCrest, Hellewell worked at Ernst and Young, Capco and Deutsche Bank.
Park appointed CEO of Eastspring AM Korea
Woong Park will take on the role of chief executive officer (CEO) for Eastspring Asset Management, Korea. He will report to the chief executive of the asset management arm of Prudential Corporation Asia, Graham Mason, who is based in Hong Kong.
Park joined the company from Mirae Asset Global Investments, where he was chief executive officer and president based in Hong Kong. Before that he was chief marketing officer for the firm in Korea.
He replaces Wonki Lee who plans to take a break from the industry. Park has also worked for Hyundai Securities, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and Woori Investment and Securities, based in London, Hong Kong and Singapore.
