US high yield issuance has recorded its best start to the year on record after another week of frenetic activity as well-priced deals were snapped up.

Matalan, the UK low-cost clothing retailer, will launch a £225m high yield bond next week, its second piece of debt to fund a dividend recapitalisation. The proceeds of the seven year bond, along with a £300m loan launched last week, will repay existing debt and to make a distribution to shareholders.

Asian bond buyers were left frustrated this week as a series of planned new issues failed to materialise despite near-perfect market conditions. Bankers blamed unrealistic borrowers, slowdowns in getting documentation ready, pending result announcements and a busy start to the year for Asia’s more frequent issuers.
