Total debt outstanding in the European speculative grade market has grown by 16% since last year, said Moody’s in a special comment yesterday. The total amount of bonds and loans outstanding, rated by Moody’s, is $601bn, borrowed by 262 European companies.

German publisher Bastei Lübbe sold €30m of 6.75% five year notes on Friday, at a time when several other companies hoping to issue Mittelstandsanleihe (Mittelstand bonds) had to pull their deals due to difficult market conditions.

The only company expected to issue a high yield bond in Europe in the near future has cancelled the deal. Kinetic Concepts, the US woundcare products maker, has abandoned the euro tranche of its $1.65bn bond offering.

The US high yield market is expecting Kinetic Concepts and Chesapeake Oilfields to price their deals, totalling $2.15bn, today (Tuesday), while MarkWest and River Rock are also lining up to issue $705m.
