ECB goes large in primary market as new year’s surge offers plenty of opportunities

The European Central Bank in January bought more covered bonds in the primary market than in any other month of its Eu60bn purchase programme.

The ECB bought Eu5.559bn of covered bonds from January 1 to January 29, of which Eu2.187bn was in the primary market, according to its latest monthly report on the scheme, which was released on Thursday (yesterday) after a meeting of its governing council.
