We have taken a new approach to our awards this year, creating shortlists for both the best deals and banks before asking our readers and other market participants to vote.
The deal shortlists were all created using a points-system for a number of different categories. These categories were different in the bond, loan and ECM markets, but they all considered the strength of execution, the spread of demand, the novelty of a deal or structure and the volatility in the wider market when a deal was executed.
Some deals feature in more than one category, but that does not mean these deals will win the more limited category. Australia Pacific LNG Processing’s $2.875bn loan, for instance, appears in three out of our four deal categories: most impressive loan in Australia and New Zealand, most impressive project financing, and most impressive loan in Asia Pacific. This is because the deal generated among the most points in the key categories for the loan market. But the votes are entirely out of our control, and the deal could end up winning none — or indeed, all — of the categories it has been shortlisted for.
We will only count one vote per category from each institution, but to make it easier, we do not force institutions to co-ordinate their votes. If, for instance, we get responses from a head of bond syndicate and a loans syndicate head, we would use the bond banker's votes for the poll in his market, and the loans banker's votes for our loans poll.
These awards cover all deals from January 1 to November 30.
