BNP restructures Asia DCM business
BNP Paribas will shift its debt capital markets (DCM) origination business from the fixed income division in Asia to its investment banking unit by October 1, sources confirm to Asiamoney PLUS. The debt syndicate desk will remain in fixed income.
The reorganisation will only affect BNP Paribas’s Asia operations and is designed to generate more business. BNP has not officially announced to whom the bank’s DCM debt origination team will ultimately report following the October 1 deadline.
The change impacts the bank’s investment grade and high yield debt originators who sit in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea.
The group includes Sameer Sopuri, head of high yield capital markets, Asia Pacific, Yung Tan, head of North Asia high yield capital markets, and Shu Duan also based in Hong Kong. Sopuri, Tan and Shu recently joined the bank from Standard Chartered.
Frank Kwong, managing director and head of syndicate, Asia Pacific, will continue to lead the debt syndicate team reporting to Robert Hawley, Jr., head of fixed income for Asia Pacific. Kwong has also been de facto head of origination after head of DCM Mark Adams left the bank in 2011 after eight years at BNP.
ANZ hires global head of rates sales
Troy Bowler has been named global head of rates investor sales at ANZ. He joins the bank from Barclays where he worked on the emerging markets flow rates franchise in London and Singapore. Before this he worked for Deutsche Bank.
At ANZ he will focus on the AUD and NZD rates business as well as developing the flow rates business in Asia with the bank’s financial institution and investor customer base.
He will be based in Singapore and report to Dominique Blanchard, global head of investor sales and to Anshul Sidher, global head of rates.
Hoest to head BNPP’s Apac commodity derivatives at BNP Paribas
Gunnar Hoest will become the head of commodity derivatives for BNP Paribas Asia Pacific, based in Singapore. He has worked in the capital markets for more than 15 years.
Before joining BNP Paribas he headed up the Asian commodity derivatives business at Credit Suisse and then at Deutsche Bank.
HSBC appoints global head of forfaiting
Luiz Simione will become global head of forfaiting and risk distribution for global trade and receivable finance (GTRF) at HSBC, effective September 1.
He moves to the position from his role as GTRF’s global head of business development for the past two years. During his 15 years at HSBC he has worked in corporate, commercial and transactional banking in Asia and Latin America, where he was head of trade and receivables finance.
He will be based in London and report to James Emmett. He takes over from John Ting, who is retiring from the bank.
Geerdink to head Singapore at RBS
Rudi Geerdink has been appointed country executive for Singapore at the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). He will focus on the bank’s core wholesale business in fixed income, debt financing, transaction services and risk management solutions.
He moves to Singapore from Kazakhstan where he was CEO and country head of markets and international banking for more than five years. Before this he was global head of traded markets business development for RBS, based in the Netherlands.
He joined the British bank from ABN Amro in 2000, and started his career with Price Waterhouse where he was part of the global risk management services team.
Deutsche hires Thailand head from UBS
Deutsche Bank has hired Phumchai Kambhato from UBS, as head of corporate banking and securities for Thialand and head of corporate finance for Thailand. He will be based in Bangkok.
He was previously managing director, head of investment banking for Thailand at UBS, according to someone with knowledge of the matter. A spokesperson for Deutsche Bank declined to comment on the move.
Jaccard joins ANZ from Citi to head liquidity management
Philippe Jaccard has joined ANZ as global head of liquidity management, transaction banking, from Citi in Hong Kong, where he was head of transaction banking.
Before this, he was head of liquidity and investment products for Citi in Asia Pacific and Japan. In this role he also headed up the global development of offshore RMB based transaction banking products. Before working in banking, he was the regional assistant treasurer for Asia Pacific with Cargill, a US-based agricultural commodity trading and processing company.
Munro named Aviva Investors CEO
Euan Munro will take over as CEO of Aviva Investors in January 2014, reporting to Mark Wilson, group CEO of the Aviva Group.
He joins the firm from Standard Life Investments, where he was global head of multi-asset investing and fixed income. Munro will take over from John Misselbrook, interim CEO of Aviva Investors.
AXA IM adds to funds distribution sales team
AXA Investment Managers has appointed Samuel Hui to its funds distribution sales team in Asia. Hui will be based in Hong Kong and will focus on Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Malaysia and the Philippines. He will report to Sandra Lau, funds distribution sales director for Asia.
Hui joins from Value Partners where he worked since 2007 as senior sales manager. Before this he worked as a sales manager at HSBC Global Asset Management and Invesco.
Sidley Austin hires energy partner
Tju Liang Chua will join Sidley Austin in Singapore as a partner in the firm’s international energy practice. His focus is on international cross-border transactions, in particular energy M&A deals between Asia and the Americas.
His appointment follows the hire of energy partner Tom Deegan in Hong Kong.
