RBS names head of SE Asia international banking

Brijesh Mehra has been named head of international banking for India and Southeast Asia at RBS. In addition, Charly Madan will take over as head of capital and portfolio management for Asia Pacific.

Mehra is currently head of international banking for India and will expand his portfolio to include Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. He is based in Mumbai. He has worked in wholesale banking for 26 years.

Madan is currently country executive and head of international banking for Thailand and will take on the additional role of overseeing capital and poortfolio management for Asia Pacific. He will remain based in Thailand. He joined RBS in December 2012 and has over 25 years of banking experience across corporate, investment banking and retail.

Both new positions are effective immediately and both will continue reporting to Madan Menon, co-head of markets and international banking for Asia Pacific.

Alias becomes CEO of Maybank

Datuk Abdul Farid bin Alias will become Maybank’s next president and chief executive officer, effective August 2. The position has been vacant since June 4, when Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid bin Omar resigned in order to join the Malaysian government as minister in the prime minister’s department.

Alias has worked Maybank deputy president and head of its global banking business since July 2010. He started his career in the Maybank Group in Aseambankers in 1992.

Since then he has worked in investment banking and capital markets at Schroders and J.P. Morgan as well as with Malaysia International Merchant Bankers. He worked at Khazanah Nasional Berhad as investment director between 2005 and 2008, before rejoining Maybank at the start of 2009.

Pearson to head metals and mining at HSBC Australia

Tony Pearson will take on the role of head of metals and mining in Australia, at HSBC. He will join the resources and energy group to focus on strategic advisory and financing solutions, in M&A, capital market fund raising and loan financing, to corporates, sovereigns and project sponsors.

He will be based in Sydney, reporting locally to Chris Russell, head of global banking for HSBC in Australia, and regionally to Bardin Davis, head of metals and mining for Asia Pacific, who is based in Hong Kong.

Pearson most recently worked in Hong Kong as head of corporate development for SouthGobi Resources. He has also worked at Citi, Westpac and the Australia Securities and Investments Commission.

LGIM hires senior fixed income specialist

Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM) has appointed Horace Hung as senior credit analyst for emerging markets. He will be responsible for independent research that will form part of LGIM’s global high yield investment process.

He joins from Manulife Asset Management (Asia) where he was senior director of credit, with a focus on high yield credit research in Asia. He has nearly 15 years of experience in the Asian credit markets. LGIM opened its Asia Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong in July 2013. It will be led by Alan Flynn, head of Asia Pacific.

Tan to head Apac IRAS at Northern Trust

Andrew Tan will head investment risk and analytical services (IRAS) for Asia Pacific at Northern Trust, focusing on technology, reporting and consulting services for institutional investors and asset managers in the region.

He has worked in the industry for more than 25 years and joins from his position as head of risk and performance consulting practice at Royal Bank of Canada. Before this he was head of client services at Toronto Dominion Bank’s corporate and institutional services.

In his new role he will be based in Singapore and will work alongside consultants in Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia.

Sidley Austin names Singapore project finance partner

Nicholas Grambas has joined Sidley Austin as a project finance partner, based in Singapore.

He has worked in Asia, Australia, Europe and the Middle East for more than 25 years, both as an investment banker and a lawyer.

Clifford Chance relocates project finance partner to Tokyo

Project finance partner at Clifford Chance Ross Howard, will move from Paris to Tokyo in September. His focus is on the advisory of large-scale international projects in the energy, natural resources and infrastructure sectors.

His move follows that of project finance specialists Ashvin Seetulsingh to Hong Kong and Phil Sealey to Perth in 2012.

Haddad joins Swift as Apac director

Edward James Haddad has joined Swift as a director for relationship management for Asia Pacific. He takes over from Patrick de Courcy, deputy chief executive for Asia Pacific who has been acting head for the relationship management team in addition to his other roles.

Haddad has lived and worked in Asia for more than 15 years, managing regional sales teams, and has more than 20 years of experience in the financial services markets. Before joining Swift he was head of sales for Asia at Thomson Reuters. He will be based in Singapore.
