Covered bonds traded at their widest ever levels this week, with Northern Rock issues quoted at almost 50bp over mid-swaps as market-makers remained unwilling to hold on to paper.

More issuers began taking advantage of the demand that exists — at the right price — for financial names, particularly in sterling, as vanilla private placements topped £1bn this week.
