A grain of hope blown away like dust in the wind

When markets are booming, trying to get away for a vacation is nigh on impossible. The only way to get some time off is to squeeze in a break in a location that happens to coincide with a very important client meeting.

At least that what my nephew told me when I finally caught up with him last weekend. The fine young chap is probably one of the busiest bankers in Hong Kong. As a DCM origination banker who is always jetting around he is also slightly weary, but that night he looked especially jaded.

He did have one ray of sunshine on the horizon which was his upcoming business trip to Korea. Not because he particularly enjoys going to visit this client, but because the trip coincided with something called “Ultra”. Apparently this is some ghastly sounding electronic dance music festival. Not my cup of tea, but my nephew was delighted. So much so that he had already paid a big premium to get a last minute ticket, extended the hotel stay for the weekend and bought new swim shorts for the pool party.

Alas, it was not to be as the client notified him the next morning that he wants to indefinitely postpone the meeting. I’ll spare you the details of my nephew’s expletive ridden reaction.

So if anyone wants to help out this pitiful chap and take up his ticket, let me know. But in the meantime I suggest you think twice before mixing work and pleasure.
