Citic Securities hires head of SE Asia fixed income sales

Mandy Leung started in her role as fixed income, currencies and commodities (FICC) sales, head of Southeast Asia at Citic Securities on November 4.

Leung previously worked at Citi. She joined the bank’s fixed income sales desk in June last year, at director level. Before this she was an investor sales director at Mitsubishi UFJ Securities International, and worked for more than 14 years at HSBC, on the investor sales desk.

In her new role, Leung will report directly to Leo Tong, head of fixed income and corporate sales for Asia, who joined the firm in August from Deutsche Bank, where he was head of credit sales for Hong Kong and offshore China.

He previously worked at Standard Chartered as head of G3 credit sales for derivatives and cash in Hong Kong.

In July, Citic Securities International bought CLSA from Crédit Agricole for US$1.2 billion and the transfer of reporting lines will begin on November 1.

Zhang joins ADB from China MoF

The Asian Development Bank has appointed Zhang Wancai as vice president, responsible for operations in the South Asia department and the Central and West Asia department.

He moves to the role from his position as head of the department of external economic cooperation at the Ministry of Finance of the People’s Republic of China. Zhang has held senior positions at the Ministry of Finance since July 1989, overseeing loan programmes, technical assistance and training international financial institutions.

From April 2007 to September 2009 he was the ADB’s executive director for China, and adviser to the World Bank’s executive director for China from December 1993 to May 1996.

BoA-Merrill in Japan equities reshuffle

Eugene Iwami has been appointed head of Japan equities at Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BoA-Merrill), reporting to Olivier Thiriet, head of Asia Pacific equities, and Jiro Seguchi, country executive for Japan, according to an internal memo seen by Asiamoney PLUS.

He will also continue in his former role as head of Japan equities trading, reporting to Arnaud Droitcourt, head of Asia Pacific equities trading. Iwami has spent his whole career with BoA-Merrill, originally joining as a graduate in New York in 1994.

Meanwhile, Hiroyuki Kaneda will take on the newly created role of vice chairman of Japan equities. He has over 27 years of experience in the Japanese equity market. Finally, Paddy Hogan will relocate to New York to lead US Japan equity sales, reporting to Patrick Doyle, head of the US Asia Pacific equity sales desk.

Commonwealth Bank hires HK MD

Maaike Steinebach has joined Commonwealth Bank as its Hong Kong country head and managing director Hong Kong for its institutional banking and markets business.

She will also work with the client coverage industry teams in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing. She joins from ABN Amro where she was country executive for Hong Kong and managing director of the large corporate and merchant banking business in Asia.

Before this she worked for Fortis Bank, and has more than 10 years experience in the region, having worked in Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Goldman’s Dees will relocate to US

Dan Dees, co-head of investment banking for Asia at Goldman Sachs, will move to New York within the next few months, according to Reuters. The exact nature of his new role is unconfirmed and a spokesperson from Goldman Sachs declined to comment on the move.

Dees has worked at the firm since 1992, when he joined straight from Duke University. He became a managing director in 2001 and a partner in 2004. He was promoted to co-head of investment banking in Asia in 2012, alongside Matthew Westerman.

RBS in senior transaction services hire

The Royal Bank of Scotland has hired Cissy Hon as head of trade product management for North Asia and head of supply chain finance for Asia. Hon’s role is a new one.

She reports regionally to Sim Woon Yap, head of trade product management Asia Pacific and functionally to Anil Walia, global head of supply chain finance.

Hon has more than 20 years experience in trade finance banking. She moves to the role from BNP Paribas in Hong Kong, where she was head of global trade solutions for local corporates and structured finance.

Before this she worked at Deutsche Bank as head of Asian and large local corporates for the global transaction bank, and at Citi as regional supply chain solutions sales manager for the treasury and trade division.

Vontobel names Singapore head of financial products

Fredy Flury will take on the role of head of financial products for Singapore at Vontobel Financial Products, effective December 1. The role is newly created.

Flury has worked at the firm for more than 10 years and was previously managing director and head of fixed income, rates and currencies for Vontobel Zurich – a role he will keep.

BlackRock poaches Taiwan head from Manulife AM

Leo Seewald has been appointed as country head for Taiwan at BlackRock, effective immediately. He will report to Michael Marquardt, chief operating officer for Asia Pacific.

He joins the firm from Manulife, where he was chairman of Manulife Asset Management Taiwan. Before that he was deputy general manager of Manulife International’s Taiwan branch. He has more than 20 years of industry experience, 13 of which were in senior management roles in Asia.

Goldman AM Asia chairman retires

Oliver Bolitho, chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM) in Asia Pacific has decided to retire from the firm at the end of the year, according to an internal memo. He will become an advisory director for the firm.

Bolitho joined Goldman Sachs in 1998 and was named head of GSAM’s UK and Irish institutional business in 2001. In 2007, he moved to Hong Kong to lead the firm in Asia Pacific ex-Japan, and became head of GSAM in Asia Pacific in 2009 and chairman in Asia Pacific in 2012.

In November 2012, Sheila Patel took on the role of head of international GSAM, responsible for emerging and East Asia as well as Asia Pacific. She is based in Singapore and took over from Bolitho, who has focused on the development of the firm’s client franchise for the past year as chairman, reporting to Patel.

Peron to head global equity at Northern Trust

Matthew Peron will become managing director, global equity at Northern Trust Asset Management. The role is a new one that brings together active and index equity teams.

Peron has 23 years of experience in the industry and was most recently managing director, active equity at the firm. He has also been a senior portfolio manager and director of equity research, since joining Northern Trust in 2005. Before this he worked in risk management and quantitative analysis at Alliance Capital, Bank One and Lincoln Capital Management.

In addition, Nick Dymond’s role as head of international equity index portfolio management in London, will be expanded to include Chicago, London, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

Co-head of global M&A at Ropes & Gray moves to HK

James Lidbury, co-head of global mergers and acquisitions at Ropes & Gray has relocated to Hong Kong to focus on Asian private equity and cross-border investments and M&A transactions.

Lidbury has led the firm’s Chicago office since its launch over five years ago. Early in his career he worked as a lawyer for the US Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington.

Ropes & Gray opened its Hong Kong office five years ago, and also has offices in Shanghai, Tokyo and Seoul.
