Business travel in the lap of luxury

Enjoy the small things in life, so the saying goes, and when you have a bit of money, those small, frivolous, things can go a long way.

A banker acquaintance travels frequently for work, making his way around airports globally. For someone who is keen on “getting his steps in”, as he says, airport trekking seems like the perfect exercise. I know I’ve put on a few kilos since I stopped running to departure gates on business trips! But this chap finds my take on his travel schedule rather humourous and has confessed his greatest indulgence is, in fact, not using his feet in airports.

Rather than walk through terminals, as he easily could, being a healthy and rather sprightly sort, he opts to pay HK$70 to be driven around in a golf cart with “door to door” service. To top it off, he often takes a video on his phone of his breezy airport drives and sends them to his team back in the office — just so they know how much he is enjoying himself zipping past the meandering plebs.

Fortunately, his colleagues have a good sense of humour and quite enjoy his narrated airport adventures. Before the chap left for his last trip, the team even chipped in and handed him HK$70 to ensure his speedy escort could take place.

With some spare cash this time, perhaps he can splurge on an airport cocktail before his flight. Being chauffeured around while imbibing a duty-free beverage? Perhaps I need to rethink my approach to travel.
