European Commission wades into Libor debate

The European Commission joined the regulatory clamour for stricter rules on Libor setting this week, adding to the growing number of institutions looking at how benchmarks are produced and supervised.

Michel Barnier, European commissioner for internal market and services, opened a consultation on new rules for benchmark indices on Wednesday.

The EC is asking for comment on all benchmark indices, including those for commodities, pensions and real estate — as well as financial indices such as Libor.
