Supply hopes dwindle after ‘bloodbath’ in AT1s

An alarming sell-off in the additional tier one market this week has added to investor woes after a brutal year for returns. New supply of subordinated debt is likely to be off the table in 2018, unless banks find the stomach for huge new issue premiums.

One specialist bank capital investor described the scenes in the market on Tuesday as a “proper bloodbath”.

AT1s from Abanca, Lloyds, Deutsche Bank, Rabobank and Standard Chartered all lost more than two points during the course of the trading session, as corporate credit lurched wider across the board.
