UBS appoints Kendall to global head of ECM
Sam Kendall has been named global head of equity capital markets (ECM) at UBS. In addition he will keep his position as head of ECM for Asia. He will continue to be based in Hong Kong.
Kendall has worked for the bank since 1996, when he joined as an equities trader. In March 2008 he became co-head of equity syndicate for Asia before taking over as head of equity syndicate for EMEA and global head of blocks in 2009. In 2011 he moved to his most recent position as head of ECM for Asia.
Hu becomes Citi global risk chief
Citi’s new chief executive officer Michael Corbat has announced his new management team, which includes promoting Brad Hu, the current head of risk for the Asia Pacific region at the bank.
Hu will become Citi’s chief risk officer, reporting to Brian Leach, the bank’s new head of franchise risk and strategy.
Stephen Bird, the current CEO of Asia Pacific will continue in his current role, according to a memo written by Corbat.
Lim promoted to CIO at GIC
Lim Chow Kiat will become the group chief investment officer of the government of Singapore investment corporation (GIC). His new position at the sovereign wealth fund will take effect from February 1, 2013.
He will take over from Ng Kok Song, who will retire after more than forty years managing Singapore’s foreign reserves. Lim will move to the role from his position as deputy chief investment officer.
He joined the group in 1993 as head of fixed income, currencies and commodities and was appointed deputy president of GIC Asset Management (GAM) in 2008.
He worked as president for investments in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) between 2009 and 2011, based in London. He took over as president of GAM in 2011, and will continue in this role alongside his new position.
Raes new Apac CEO at Swift
Alain Raes will take on the position of chief executive for Asia Pacific in addition to his current role as chief executive for EMEA at Swift, the electronic messaging company.
He takes over from Ian Johnston who left the role at the end of December. Raes will relocate from Swift’s global headquarters in Belgium to the firm’s Singapore office.
Raes was named chief executive for EMEA in September 2007. Before this he was director of the continental Europe region, covering securities as well as banking sales activities. Raes joined Swift in 1990, from Citibank in Belgium. He has also worked at Fortis Bank in Singapore.
Mayer Brown hires A&O’s Thompson
Ben Thompson has joined Mayer Brown’s Singapore office as a project finance consultant, focusing on Southeast Asia. He moves from Allen & Overy, where he was based in Bangkok. Before this he worked for Linklaters in Singapore, and has worked in project finance for over ten years.
The move follows the hire of consultant Quynh Anh Lam from Freshfields in Ho Chi Minh City in October, as well as partner Nathan Dodd, who joined Mayer Brown from Linklaters in September. Dodd heads up the projects group in Southeast Asia.
Hekker partner at Sidley Austin
Gerard Hekker has been named a partner in Sidley Austin’s Singapore office as the firm elects 26 new partners worldwide. The role was effective from January 1.
Hekker specialises in securities, including corporate finance, liability management, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and restructuring transactions.
