Chan named head of DCM Apac at HSBC
Alexi Chan has been promoted to head of debt capital markets for Asia Pacific as part of a reorganisation of the bank’s global banking and markets (GBM) division in the region.
Chan, who was previously head of DCM origination for Asia, will take over from and report to Stephen Williams, who was promoted to head up capital financing for Asia Pacific last month. Chan will also report functionally to Bryan Pascoe, global head of debt capital markets financing. He will continue to be based in Singapore.
He has been with HSBC since 2000 and has worked in both Singapore and London.
Nomura hires head of Taiwan equity sales
Mei-Yu Shih will join Nomura as head of Taiwan equity sales and trading, based in Taipei, according to an internal memo.
She joins from Bank of America Merrill, where she worked for over 12 years, most recently as head of Taiwan equity sales – a position she has held since 2008. Before working on the sell-side, she was a portfolio manager with the National Investment Trust Company for 12 years.
She is one of a number of Nomura equity hires from Bank of America Merrill Lynch over the past few months, as reported by Asiamoney PLUS.
VTB boosts Asia fixed income team
VTB Capital has hired two from UBS as it adds to its fixed income division in Asia. Ben Jones has been named head of fixed income sales. At UBS he headed private financial solutions for Asia Pacific. Before this he worked at Goldman Sachs between 2005 and 2010 in the private and distressed distribution team.
In his new role, Jones will report directly to Philip Hamilton, global fixed income sales, and regionally to Damien Chunilal, Asian CEO for the firm.
In addition, Vikram Shahi has joined as head of multi product sales for India. He will also be based in Singapore, reporting to Hamilton, as well as to Makram Abboud, CEO for Middle East and Africa and co-head of the international multi product origination and distribution group, and to Chunilal at a regional level.
Shahi has more than 18 years experience in the India market, most recently heading up the financial solutions group for the country for UBS. Before this he held various positions at Deutsche Bank in Mumbai.
Standard Bank loses head of loan syndication
Les Collett, head of loan syndications, global markets Asia at Standard Bank, is leaving the firm to set up a financial solutions division in Hong Kong for Willis Group – a UK risk adviser, insurance and reinsurance broker. He will start his new role on October 1 and will remain based in Hong Kong.
In the past he has held senior positions with banks in London, before moving to Hong Kong in 2007 with Crédit Agricole.
Adelman to head Asian governments at GS
David Adelman will join Goldman Sachs as head of government affairs for Asia Pacific. He will be responsible for overseeing public policy in the region. He joins as a managing director and will be based in Singapore this year before moving to Hong Kong in 2014, according to an internal memo.
He joins the firm from his position as US ambassador to Singapore from 2010 until August this year. Before this he was a partner at law firm Sutherland Asbill and Brennan. He has also taught at the University of Georgia.
StanChart forms global treasury solutions team
Standard Chartered has launched a global treasury solutions team for its transaction banking business. It will be led by Victor Penna, the bank’s new head of treasury solutions, transaction banking. He will be based in Singapore and report to Jitan Arora, global head of sales, transaction banking.
He joins from J.P. Morgan where he was managing director and regional head of treasury solutions in Asia Pacific.
The Standard Chartered team also comprises Philippe Tian, treasury solutions adviser, who will cover China and Taiwan from Shanghai. Before joining Standard Chartered, Tian was treasury director for GE China.
Brian Leung, treasury solutions adviser, will cover Hong Kong, Korea and Japan, from Hong Kong. Byron Gardiner will cover Southeast Asia, based in Singapore, and Olle Malmgren will cover the Middle East and Africa from Dubai.
CBA head of institutional banking resigns
Ian Saines, group executive, institutional banking and markets at Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), has resigned, and will leave the group at the end of 2013.
He has worked for CBA since 2004, in a series of senior executive positions in the institutional banking division. He took on his current role in March 2009. His replacement has not yet been announced.
Rego promoted to deputy MD at IDBI
Melwyn Rego has been appointed deputy managing director at IDBI Bank, for a period of five years. He currently heads up the infrastructure corporate group, project appraisal, debt syndication, structuring and advisory, treasury and international banking.
He has worked at the bank in various positions since 1984. From September 2003 to December 2007 he was CEO and managing director of IDBI Homefinance. In January 2008 he took over as head of the international banking division.
Sohn to head Apac investments at Citi PB
So-Yon Sohn has been named head of Asia Pacific regional investments at Citi Private Bank, effective September 23. She will report to Eduardo Martinez Campos, Citi Private Bank global head of investments and Bassam Salem, Citi Private Bank Asia CEO, and will be based in Hong Kong.
She is currently head of Asia Pacific credit sales and fixed income sales in Hong Kong, responsible for the distribution of all flow credit products in Asia ex-Japan. She will continue in her current responsibilities until a replacement has been found. Before her current position she was head of Asia Pacific credit sector specialists at the bank.
Mayer Brown takes on China specialists
Betty Tam will join Mayer Brown as a partner in Shanghai. This follows the hire of Guoqing Li as a consultant in Beijing, last month.
Tam has more than 12 years of experience advising on cross-border M&A and foreign direct investment in China. She has experience in a range of industries including power, water, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. She will work closely with the firm’s corporate partners in Beijing and Hong Kong.
Li has more than 10 years experience advising issuers and underwriters on IPOs in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Shenzhen.
Sidley Austin adds investment funds team
Sidley Austin is expanding its investment funds practice in Singapore with the hire of four new layers. Han Ming Ho joins as partner and co-head of the firm’s Asia investment funds practice. He brings his team, Josephine Law who will join as counsel, senior associate Joel Seow and associate Reina Chua.
Ho will co-head the practice with Effie Vasilopoulos. His experience is in hedge funds, private equity funds, real estate funds and exchange traded funds.
Schulte Research sets up Hong Kong office
Independent agency Schulte Research International has opened in Hong Kong and will focus exclusively on equity markets in emerging economies.
Founded by Paul Schulte, the firm will provide its clients with research on a fortnightly basis on the Asian equity market with an emphasis on bank liquidity and solvency, and corporate credits.
Schulte, an industry veteran, was most recently the global head of financial strategy and Asia banks research at China Construction Bank. Prior to that, he has held senior positions at Nomura, Lehman Brothers and Barings, and was also part of the team that set up the equity research department at Credit Suisse in 1992 in Hong Kong.
Schulte’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, hedge funds, mutual funds and pension funds. The firm also has an office in Brazil.
