No cause for ABS alarm

Yield-hungry ABS investors are snapping up bonds backed by the UK equivalent of subprime mortgages. But there’s no cause for alarm. UK non-conforming RMBS is very different from the toxic US subprime sector at the root of the 2008 crisis.

Virgil Mortgage No1, a securitisation of mortgages originated by three non-conforming loan providers before the crisis, was successfully placed last week. There was plenty of demand for a portfolio of loans with 40% delinquent borrowers and a 110% indexed loan-to-value ratio.
