Meet the Dante of the Euromarkets.

A one-time leasing specialist, Blaine Tomlinson is credited with the invention and application of the evocatively named Heaven and Hell structure, known somewhat more prosaically in the US as the Icon or Index Currency Option Note.

At Nomura, Tomlinson headed a team that he liked to describe as "sales engineers" who would visit investors and convey their specific requirements to the swap and syndicate departments.

In the case of an IBM Heaven and Hell structure devised by Tomlinson and his engineers in 1985 investors had asked for the opportunity to take a view on the dollar-yen rate.

In 1991, he founded Financial Risk Management, an independent advisory firm specialising in constructing and monitoring hedge fund portfolios.
