2008: an odyssey into the unknown

What a difference a year makes. Last January bankers and private equity partners had a swagger: the market was bullish and it was easy to make money. But after the horrors of the subprime mortgage market, that swagger has disappeared leaving huge uncertainty for the start of 2008, says Alistair Dawber.
