Repo exemption from transaction tax ‘essential’, says ICMA

The short-term repo market must be exempt from the European Union’s proposed financial transaction tax (FTT) to avoid “serious negative consequences for other financial markets and the real economy”, according to the International Capital Market Association.

The transaction tax would cause short-term repo transactions in Europe to plunge by at least two thirds, according to an ICMA study authored by Henley Business School’s Richard Comotto.
