Three cheers for a New Year
When I was younger, I had many aspirations to establish myself as a worldly gentleman. By retirement, I thought I had accomplished them all. But a recent night out showed me I’m not quite there yet.
I strayed from my usual Captain’s Bar to sip a Christmas martini or two with a younger banker. The chap has been in the city for five years, and knows his way around a nice bottle of gin, so I trusted his recommendation of a new bar and new drinks.
While other tables sipped from dainty martini glasses, our drinks arrived in large snifters with generous portions, which my friend said was his own special beverage. I assumed his regular presence at the bar had earned him the right to make demands about his cocktail, but when the bill arrived, I noticed the drinks were, in fact, named after the chap.
So my New Year’s resolution? To spend more time at Captain’s Bar so I can leave my mark on the place. Merry Christmas!
