London-based asset manager Cairn Capital has hired James Starky, a veteran of the European structured finance legal scene, as chief legal officer. Starky comes from Banque AIG, where he was associate general counsel and covered the derivatives, capital markets and structured finance business. Starky now has responsibility for all legal aspects at Cairn, including both the structuring and advisory business and the asset management business. Starky joins the executive management team at Cairn, alongside directors Tim Frost, David Littlewood, David Henriques, Robert Pierce Jones and Paul Campbell.
Starky was previously a partner at U.S. law firm Cadwalader Wickersham and Taft and helped set up that firm’s London office. Before that, was a partner at U.K. law firm Freshfields. “James is one of the top structured finance lawyers in the world; having the benefit of his experience is a huge advantage for us,” said Campbell, director at Cairn.
One of Starky’s first tasks will be to oversee the launch of Cairn’s new credit opportunities fund (BW, 8/16).
