Barnier to follow ICB lead with banking split proposal for Europe
Michel Barnier, European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services, surprised bankers and analysts this week by announcing plans to look at a split of retail and institutional banks in Europe. In doing so, he is following the lead of the UK’s Independent Commission on Banking, which has already recommended that a ringfence be put around the retail operations of UK banks.
