According to shadow chancellor Ed Balls, only superhumans should apply to be Mervyn King’s successor as governor of the Bank of England. He might have a point. The job has a vast range of responsibilities — many of them new — from monetary policy and financial stability through to regulation of retail and wholesale banking, and insurance. With such a bulging portfolio, there is a danger that the successful candidate might not be successful for long. Phil Moore reports.
