Europe takes first step towards banking union

The European Council and the European Commission on Thursday agreed to make the European Central Bank single supervisor for Eurozone lenders from early 2014, paving the way for a full European banking union. Market participants welcomed the agreement but cautioned that it was merely the first step on a long road to full fiscal integration in the Eurozone.
