Putting my money where my mouth is

I was a risk taker, back in the day, always on the lookout for money-making ventures. Now that I am retired, I am more conservative, but I made a big blunder on Tuesday after imbibing a Scotch or two at Captain’s Bar.

I chatted with the barman — a delightful lad but a bit dim with a penchant for gambling. So I offered up an easy bet I knew he would take, and I would win.

I bet the chap that Hillary Clinton would win the US presidency and when she did, my drinks would be on the house for the rest of the year. If she lost, I would pay the barman a $10 tip for every drink I order. We shook on it, and with a smirk, I went home knowing I was guaranteed free drinks for weeks.

So imagine my shock when Donald Trump emerged victorious. My misery knew no bounds — the markets may have recovered quickly, but I won’t, knowing that my trips to Captain’s Bar will be limited this year.
