Depositor preference disparity could lead to contagion
The European Commission’s discussion paper on bail-in threw out one unexpected suggestion: that national deposit guarantee schemes (DGSs) could suffer losses under bail-in while the actual depositors they protect would be protected. Bankers said it ran counter to suggestions made last year by the UK’s Independent Commission on Banking which warned against such a move.
