Sharp fall in profits at Santander although provisions stabilise
Banco Santander put a brave face on its disappointing first quarter results on Thursday, stressing that the €1.2bn reported profit was more than half of the entire profit posted in 2012. But it was nonetheless 26% down on the first three months of last year, as revenues fell 9% but costs were only 1% lower.
