  • Mike Johnson was hired by BNP Paribas as co-head of leveraged finance UK in September 2004, a move that took him from Commerzbank, where he had been responsible for developing financial sponsor coverage since 2002. He works alongside Nicola d'Anselmo, who moved to London from Milan last year, and reports to Jean Bergeret, head of European leveraged finance. BNP Paribas has just over 40 leveraged finance bankers in Europe.
  • Michael Sherwood started at Goldman Sachs in 1986 as a swaps analyst and this year was promoted to co-chief executive officer of the firm's European operations at the age of 39. Previous CEO Peter Weinberg's decision to return to the US created the opportunity for Sherwood. He now runs the firm's European operation with Scott Kapnick (qv), global head of Goldman's investment banking division.
  • Miles Millard was made head of debt capital markets at Deutsche Bank in July last year, in addition to his job as head of corporate coverage in Europe. He is responsible for financial institutions, sovereigns, supranationals and agencies, and also corporates. He joined Deutsche to head UK and Nordic origination, and after the departure of John Winter and Grant Kvalheim in 2001 became head of European corporate origination. Jorge Calderon was appointed global head of DCM, establishing a new group in DCM called corporate coverage.
  • Mike Nawas became global head of fixed income capital markets at ABN Amro in October 2004, the latest in a rapid sequence of promotions at the Dutch bank. Indeed, few people in the capital markets have had such a quick rise up through the ranks as Nawas has. Starting his banking career at ABN in 1989 as an analyst in its head office in Amsterdam (he is one of those rare commodities in the banking world — a one firm man) he gained experience in a number of areas such as planning and control, commodity finance, relationship banking and asset backed securities. It was the last of these products that Nawas developed a passion for: working in the business for the whole of the 1990s, landing the job of European head of asset securitisation in 2001, followed by a further promotion in 2003 to global head of asset securitisation.
  • For Oldrich Masek, structured credit is still on the way from being "a small private placement business" to a durable, mainstream business. Getting it all the way there will involve making the world see that structured credit is the answer to its "increasing need for payouts on investments that are measurable" and predictable.
  • Olivier Khayat was promoted last July from European head of debt capital markets to global head of DCM at SG CIB, replacing Jean-Luc Parer. DCM is one of the five main businesses in SG's debt finance group, headed by Marc Breillout.
  • Niall Cameron was promoted to head of global markets at ABN Amro in April this year, the latest in a series of organisational restructurings at the bank that has seen the number of staff under his control rise to 2,350. Under Cameron's boss, Piero Overmars (qv), the bank has been heavily involved in an efficiency drive.
  • Osman Semerci was appointed co-head of Europe, Middle East & Africa global markets in January 2005. Semerci is in charge of global markets while Andrea Orcel, his partner in EMEA global markets, runs investment banking. The EMEA division mirrors the US model by having its two most senior bankers as co-heads of global markets and investment banking.
  • Paul Hearn was appointed global co-head of fixed income marketing at BNP Paribas in January 2005, taking responsibility for origination and distribution across the firm's foreign exchange, credit and rates, and cash and derivatives businesses. He and his co-head David Brunner report to Jacques d'Estais, who runs BNP Paribas' fixed income business, while Frédéric Janbon runs fixed income trading.
  • Osama Abbasi was promoted to co-head of European fixed income coverage at Credit Suisse First Boston in London in December 2004. He reports to Jim Healy, global head of fixed income, and Jeremy Bennet (qv), Jonathan McHardy (qv) and Gael de Boissard (qv), co-heads of European fixed income. Abbasi is responsible for the distribution of all the firm's fixed income products for financial institutions and institutional investors as well as the origination of debt for European financial institutions. Abbasi also sits on CSFB's management council and the bank's fixed income operating committee.
  • Omar Selim has been a managing director of Barclays Capital and head of sales, trading and origination for Germany, Austria and Switzerland since June 2004. He joined Barclays from Credit Suisse First Boston, where he was in charge of fixed income for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
