If the ranch members had ever needed a lesson in schmoozing and boozing, they certainly got one at the BarCap’s bash last week. The good, the bad and the ugly of the loan market descended on St Paul’s for the party last week Thursday, and then descended some more. The cathedral’s crypt certainly made for an unorthodox venue, but in and amongst the tombs there was plenty of gossip to be had.

The ranch is in a state of high excitement. This evening, no less, the loan market event of the year will take place. By some cruel twist of fate, however, by the time you read this article, the party will already have happened.

It may only be October, but down on the ranch preparations for the season of Christmas parties have well and truly begun. Loan Ranger, Silver and Tonto have been dragged kicking and screaming into the internet age. From now on, the Loan Market’s favourite column will be found online only — euroweek.com/loans. A new column will be posted every week on Thursday evening so make sure you check out the website.

Let us take a moment to reflect, loan marketeers, how far we have come in the last year and how much our market has changed. We refer, of course, to the one year anniversary of Lehman Brothers’ demise.

A contrite Loan Ranger has an apology to make… in last week’s issue we may have painted a picture of Commerzbank’s Sandy Bruce as the kind of guy that tells bad jokes. This is not true. Loan Ranger would like to make it clear that Sandy is really very funny and was just having an off day when he told the infamous One About The Swine Flu Hotline.
