BoA-Merrill DCM originator Leong joins Macquarie
Macquarie has hired Edmund Leong as a managing director on its Asia Capital Markets team. Leong joined last week from the DCM origination desk at Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BoA-Merrill), according to a person with knowledge of the matter.
At Macquarie, he will report to Stephen Panizza, head of debt capital markets for Asia. The pair have a history of working together as before BoA-Merrill, Leong worked for Panizza at ING and ABN Amro.
Leong leaves BoA-Merrill after six and a half years at the bank. In his new job, he will continue to be based in Hong Kong.
Paulus to head Apac public sector at J.P. Morgan
Michael Paulus will take on the role of managing director and head of public sector coverage for Asia Pacific at J.P. Morgan. He will be responsible for clients such as national governments, central banks and sovereign wealth funds in the region.
He joins the bank from HSBC and will be based in Hong Kong, reporting to Daniel Zelikow, global head of public sector coverage for J.P. Morgan and to Muhammad Aurangzeb, head of global corporate banking for Asia Pacific.
Before working for HSBC he worked for Citi, also covering the public sector. He also held senior relationship management and market sales roles at Bank of America, Dresdner and First Chicago. He was also deputy assistant secretary for federal finance at the US Department of the Treasury and began his career at the US Federal Reserve.
HSBC’s London-based RMB specialist leaves
Paul Gooding, managing director and head of European RMB business development at HSBC is leaving the bank, as reported by EuroWeek.
Gooding joined HSBC in February 2012 in order to cement the bank’s position as a dominant player in the offshore renminbi business outside of Hong Kong. He reported to Spencer Lake, co-head of global markets at HSBC, who is also based in London.
Last year the bank hired Rongrong Huo as associate director, European RMB business development, to work alongside Gooding.
He moved to the role from his position as head of HSBC’s European credit trading division where he worked for seven years, before taking six months leave between roles. Before this he worked for Credit Suisse for five years as head of cash credit trading. He has also worked for Greenwich Capital Markets in trading roles in London and Tokyo.
Goldman’s Nishiwaki joins UBS in Japan
Junya Nishiwaki will join UBS as head of Japan corporate client solutions (CCS), effective August 23. He will oversee client coverage, M&A advisory and financing services in Japan, reporting locally to Zenji Nakamura, Japan country head, and functionally to Matthew Grounds, head of CCS Asia Pacific.
He joins the bank from Goldman Sachs, where he started his career in 1994, working in London, New York and Tokyo. Most recently he was head of the general industry group in the Japan investment banking division.
Lyxor AM hires Asia head
Gilbert Tse has been appointed head of Asia for Lyxor Asset Management. He will be based in Hong Kong, reporting to Pierre Gil, head of international development for the firm.
The role is a new one and Tse will be responsible for the business in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and Korea, as well as overseeing the firm’s China joint venture with Fortune SG Fund Management.
He moves to the role from his position as executive vice general manager of Fortune SG Fund Management. His replacement at the joint venture is yet to be announced.
White & Case hires China partner
Julian Chung has joined law firm White & Case as a partner in its Hong Kong office. He has worked for 26 years advising on public M&A and equity capital markets transactions, with a focus on greater China.
He covers state owned and private companies in China as well as the rest of Asia, and the listings of international companies in Hong Kong. He has also worked in the mining and commodities sectors.
He joins from Ropes & Gray, where he was also a partner. Before that he was a partner at Norton Rose.
