Morgan Stanley has become the first pure play US investment bank to issue a green bond, with a $500m self-led deal placed in the US on Wednesday.

Private sector banks have issued themed green bonds before, beginning with a R4bn deal by Nedbank in 2012, according to the Climate Bonds Initiative.

Crédit Agricole CIB, the investment bank of Crédit Agricole, has issued a string of notes since January 2013 to fund its green loan portfolio.
