Morgan Grabs CSFB Telecom Analyst In H-Y Research Push

Morgan Stanley has hired Drew Hanson to lead its high-yield telecom research effort, according to Bill Reiland, head of high-yield research at Morgan Stanley. Hanson, a runner-up on the Institutional Investor 2001 All-America Fixed-Income Research Team while at Credit Suisse First Boston, is the first of several additions Reiland will be making in an effort to add experience and prestige to the firm's high-yield research effort.

Reiland says he plans to also hire a senior analyst and two junior analysts in London to fill recent vacancies created by the departures of Angus Rosborough and Rich Thelan. The junior analysts will cover the industrial and consumer sectors. The senior analyst will cover either the industrial or consumer sectors, with Bela Ramakrishnan, who currently has responsibility for both, taking whichever sector remains. Additionally, Reiland expects to hire a senior chemicals analyst, to replace Jim Potesky, who left earlier this year to join Credit Suisse Asset Management, as well as one other senior analyst in what will be a new position.

Hanson will start today, reporting to Reiland. He will continue to cover wireless telecom, as he did at CSFB. He fills a position that had been vacant since the departure of Charles Wyman, who left for buyside heavyweight Pacific Investment Management Company earlier this year, (BW, 4/22). Reiland considers the telecom group fully staffed, with five analysts, including Hanson. The group also includes Steve Flynn, who covers wireless, and Anton Anikst, who covers wireline, and two junior analysts.

At CSFB, Hanson reported to Mark Grotevant, telecom group head and co-head of high-yield research. Grotevant says he will assume high-yield wireless coverage at CSFB, along with his current responsibility in wireline. He points out that he was the wireless analyst before the firm hired Hanson. He says it is "not relevant" whether CSFB will seek a replacement for Hanson.
