Emerging Europe and CIS round-up

Turkey fighting inflation, unemployment up in Romania

Erdem Basci, acting governor of the central bank, said that they would stick to the monetary policies previously determined in the framework of inflation-targeting model. The floating exchange rate regime was a sine qua non for inflation targeting, he continued. On March 14th, the board of the central bank appointed Basci as the acting governor to replace the previous governor Surreyya Serdengecti, whose term expired on March 14th. Economy minister Ali Babacan submitted the decision for the new governor yesterday to the President.  Although Babacan did not made any comment, reportedly the government's choice for full time appointment is Basci.

Unemployment in Romania inched up to 6.2% in January but it remains 0.2 percentage points below the 6.4% unemployment 12 months earlier. The statistics office promised to improve the reporting procedures for the unemployment, as the official releases tend to understate the real situation. The labour offices report the registered unemployed people but not all people with a job and actively seeking work have enough incentives to apply with the labour offices. The unregistered workers are another issue complicating the statistics.
