Official embroiled in corruption scandal

Treasury minister Andrzej Mikosz has tendered his resignation, PM Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz announced on Tuesday afternoon. In the evening, the premier convened another press conference to announce that he accepted the resignation. Marcinkiewicz said that Mikosz had undertaken a range of far-reaching actions associated with, amongst others, ownership supervision of Treasury companies, he had prepared changes and state actions in the matters of the insurer PZU, the gas market monopolist PGNiG and the merger of Bank Pekao and BPH. All the actions he took, infringed and infringe the interests of many circles in Poland , he added. Earlier, before midday , Mikosz told a press conference at the treasury ministry that he would resign if the PM asked him to. Tuesday's edition of the daily Rzeczpospolita reported that a USD 370,000 loan had been granted by Mikosz's wife to the mother of one of the stock exchange investors suspected of, amongst others manipulating shares in Kopeks. The newspaper suggested that the funds were being "turned over" by the loan recipient's son.
