Donor nations consider economic aid package for Lebanon

the economic aid package would be subject to implementation of political and economic reforms

The US, France, Britain and the World Bank are contemplating to provide an economic aid package for Lebanon. The Lebanese newspaper The Daily Star reported that the French foreign ministry's spokesman, Jean-Baptiste Mattei, said that the economic aid package would be subject to implementation of political and economic reforms.

Baptiste Mattei said that the officials from the US, France, Britain and the World Bank discussed the request for economic assistance put forth by the new Lebanese government. One of the sources told The Daily Star that these countries want to see political and economic reforms carried out in Lebanon. The US and the UN are demanding that Lebanon implement the remaining clauses of Security Council Resolution 1559, which calls for the disarmament of Hizbullah and all non-Lebanese militias.

The new election law and full commitment to the implementation of the remaining 1989 Taif Accord are also amongst the conditions stipulated for sanctioning of financial assistance.
