French 'no' has no effect on Poland's eurozone entry, says PM

Analysts had said that a negative result in France could cause a weakening of the zloty

The rejection of the European Constitution Treaty by the French on Sunday does not have any influence on the

process of Poland's entrance in the eurozone, Prime Minister Marek Belka said on Monday. In recent weeks, analysts had said that a negative result of the referendum in France could cause a weakening of the zloty.

"It is difficult to imagine a negative reaction from the markets in Poland. One can speculate, that the euro may weaken vis-à-vis the US dollar," Belka added. In Sunday's referendum, France rejected the EU Constitutional Treaty.

Some investors had been worried it would have an adverse effect on the widening of the eurozone. Poland aims to enter the euro-zone in 2009 at the earliest.
